After the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra chips, Apple has finally released their next powerful chip Apple M2. Apple introduced the M2 chip at the WWDC ( Worldwide Developers Conference) on June 6, 2022. The Apple M1 was a ground-breaking chip when it was first launched. Like the M1 chip, the M2 chip will be another powerful chip from Apple. The first Mac to get the M2 chip is one of Apple’s most popular laptops- the MacBook Air. Let’s know more details about the new Apple M2 chip.
So far, we have been hearing rumours that the next chip from Apple will be the successor to the existing Apple M1 chip. Yes, after the release of the M2 chip, we can say it is the successor to the previous Apple M1 processor. Apple brings many new features with this latest chip. This article will discuss the significant differences between the Apple M1 and M2 processors.
Apple M2 chip vs Apple M1 chip
There will be some key differences between the M1 and M2 chips. Like the previous M1 chip, the new Apple M2 also uses Apple’s custom Arm silicon, and it’s built on a 5nm process complete with 20 billion transistors. That’s a considerable number. It is 25 per cent more than the Apple M1 processor.
During the event, Apple promised that the M2 would have an 18 per cent faster CPU and 35 per cent faster GPU than the Apple M1 chip.
According to Apple, you will get 1.9x faster performance than other 10-core laptop chips. As per official reports, Apple uses new performance and efficiency cores on the M2 chip, alongside 24GB of unified memory and 100Gbps of memory bandwidth, to get better performance over the Apple M1 chip. Everything indicates that the Apple M2 will be more efficient and powerful than the M1 chip as Apple uses four high-performance cores with four high-efficiency cores on the M2 chip.
With the Apple M2 chip, Apple has brought a new feature called MagSafe charging. Which feature was not available in the M1 processor. The M2 also features a next-generation secure enclave, neural engine, and an updated media engine. That means this latest chip can play multiple streams of 4K and 8K video simultaneously. The updated media engine supports 8K H.264 and HEVC video.
