Most of us use our PC’s Wi-Fi connection: at home, to connect to the Internet box (such as Livebox, Freebox), on the move to connect to the nearest public wireless access point. For the freedom it provides – especially with a laptop, Wi-Fi has become essential. However, the Wi-Fi connection can be disturbed by many obstacles affecting the communication between the PC and the wireless access point: exchanges are laborious, the quality of the Wi-Fi connection drops. and the internet connection is slow.
Is the Wi-Fi connection between your PC and your Internet box optimal? How do you know if you are on the best Wi-Fi network? Here we are going to talk about how to check the Wi-Fi signal strength in Windows 11 in order to assess the quality of your connection.
About the Wi-Fi signal
The Wi-Fi signal corresponds to the radio waves that are emitted by the Wi-Fi router in order to establish communication with another Wi-Fi compatible device. Often expressed in strength or power, it is symbolized by an icon with 4 or 5 bars on Windows 11 and other operating systems. This will tell you the quality of the signal. Most devices display a Wi-Fi signal strength to help diagnose poor signal quality or to inform their support teams. For the Wi-Fi signal, it is between -30 and -90 dBm (Excellent – Low).
Ways to check Wi-Fi signal strength on Windows 11
1. From the notification area
In the Windows 11 operating system notification area, the Wi-Fi icon appears: using its number of bars, it quickly tells you if your connection is optimal.
By clicking on this icon, a window opens with the name of the network to which you are connected, as well as the other Wi-Fi networks that are available nearby.
Check the number of bars of each Wi-Fi access point before connecting. Not that the higher the number of bars, the stronger the signal and the better your Internet connection!
2. From the Settings
In order to check the strength of the Wi-Fi signal on Windows 11, you can use the Settings app > Network & Internet. By default, you will be on the Status page where you will have the Wi-Fi icon proving that you are well connected with the signal strength visualization. You will have more or less the same display by going to the Wi-Fi page.
3. Using WifiInfoView
By using third-party software such as WifiInfoView you will have more information on the available Wi-Fi networks and their respective performances. It is very easy to use and simple to understand.
