Reset Windows 11 to its Factory Settings

To reset Windows 11 with the Reset This PC tool, follow these instructions:

1. Start the Reset this PC tool

Case 1: You still have access to Windows 11

  • Open Settings > System> Recovery.
  • Click the Reset this PC button.

Case 2: Windows 11 no longer starts

  • Create a Windows 11 installation USB key.
  • Start your PC from the Windows 11 USB key.
  • After confirming the regional and language options on the first screen, click Repair computer.
  • Click on Troubleshoot.
  • Then click on Reset this PC.

2. Select the reset method

  • Keep my files: your personal files will be kept. However, the apps you installed and your settings will be deleted.
  • Delete all: performs a Windows 11 reset. All files on the drive will be deleted (applications, settings and personal files).

3. Choose how to reinstall Windows 11

  • Cloud Download: Downloads Windows 11 installation files from Microsoft’s servers. More reliable, but requires a very high-speed connection and an unlimited data plan. Useful if the local reinstallation fails, especially when the recovery partition is damaged.
  • Local reinstallation: reinstalls Windows 11 from the installation files present on the recovery partition. Faster, but may fail if recovery data is corrupted.

4. The next screen summarizes all the options you have selected. Click Change Settings to view more options.

5. Choose whether or not you want to clean the data:

  • Not checked: Performs a quick erase of the drive, the files currently on the drive will only be dereferenced but not deleted (they will be deleted as new files replace them in the locations they have freed). This is the fastest solution but be aware that it will always be possible to recover your old files with recovery software for example (for a while).
  • Checked: Performs a complete erase of the drive, all files will be permanently erased. It will be impossible to recover them. This is the safest solution if you have sensitive data but be aware that it is quite long (allow several hours depending on the size of the reader).

6. If the reset tool detects that you have other drives on the disk where Windows is installed (and also drives on other disks), it will give you the option to format all those drives via the Remove All option files from all drives.

7. After clicking Confirm, click Next to proceed.

8. The last screen summarizes the actions that the tool will perform as part of resetting Windows 11. When you are ready, click the Reset button.

9. Wait while Windows 11 reboots.

10. After installation, configure Windows 11. Log in with your user account and voila, Windows 11 has been reset.
