The iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE (First Generation) users might wonder whether their phones will get the latest iOS 16 updates. Apple recently released iOS 15.4, but now Apple is planning to release the iOS 16 update in September 2022. iOS 16 will add an always-on display feature, and lock screen widgets with new wallpapers. In this article, we will talk about whether the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE (First Generation) users will be able to use iOS 16 on their iPhones or not.
Update 30/08/2022: Apple released the iOS 16 beta 8 with bug fixes, optimization and performance improvement. It comes with build number 20A5358a. If you own an iPhone 8 or newer, you can test the pre-release iOS 16 software by joining Beta Software Program. Navigate to the General > Software Update menu on your iPhone’s Settings app.
iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE (First Generation) iOS 16 Update Status
Reportedly, Apple plans to drop support for the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and the iPhone SE (first generation). The iOS 16 would require a minimum A10 chipset to run its show. On the other hand, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE come with the Apple A9 chipset. So, by this logic, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE (First Generation) would not get support for the iOS 16 update.
However, nothing is official until Apple announces iOS 16 at WWDC 2022. Until Apple announces that it will stop support for the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE, the information should be treated with salt. The information was incorrect last year when it claimed that iPhone 6S and the original iPhone SE would not be able to update to iOS 15. But, later, both models got the support of the iOS 15 update.
Previously, Apple rolled out iOS 15 to iPhones ranging from iPhone 12 series launched in 2020 to the iPhone 6S in 2015. But, the iPhone SE first-gen, which launched in 2016, also got the iOS 15 update. So, all rumoured information should be taken with a pinch of salt unless Apple announces an official statement on it.
Conclusion
However, it’s too early in the rumour cycle to know whether the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE (First Generation) will get the latest iOS 16 updates. Apple is likely to announce a decision on this at the net WWDC conference that usually takes place sometime in June. The last time it did so was back in 2019 with the introduction of iOS 13, when Apple dropped support for the iPhone 6 series and other older iPhones.
